Claire and Jake

Tell us a little about you; what you both do, how did you meet, that sort of thing.
I’m a hairdresser, Jake is a carpenter, and we live in Trafalgar. We met when we were both 17 in 2008, at a 16th birthday party. We had mutual friends, and had had been at several events at the same time, but were never introduced until that night. We hit it off instantly, but I wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time, so left the party without exchanging numbers. Lucky for me, my girlfriend Hannah knew me better than I did clearly, and had put my number into Jake’s phone without me knowing, and the rest we can call history!
Who proposed? Please describe the moment.
Jake proposed in August 2016, in the house we were owner-building together. He told me he wanted to take me out for a special dinner one Friday night, as we had been spending all our weekends working at the house. While getting ready, he told me we had to swing past the house on our way, as he had picked up some flooring samples for me to look at. Once we arrived, he took me down to the back lounge, where the floor samples were laid out, and told me to have a good look at them while he checked out the installation of plaster upstairs. After a minute or two, he called out for me to climb the ladder up to the 2nd story theatre room to have a look “how good it looked”. As I got to the top of the ladder, I see Jake standing there, surrounded by fairy lights, candles, and a picnic rug complete with wine and cheese! When Jake dropped to his knee and presented me with my beautiful ring, (which he designed!) how could I say no? It was the most thoughtful and beautiful proposal ever!
The dress, did you know at first site or did you try on a few?
Amante was the first place I went to try on dresses, and I did not expect to find my dress that day. My original plan for my dress was something quite simple, maybe lace, and absolutely no sparkle! (I literally said this to Hayley from Amante, no sparkles or sequence.) Clearly the Amante girls know their stuff, because despite my initial hesitation, Hayley convinced me to try on the fully sparkling Lottie dress, and it was love at first sight.
We still went to several other stores in Melbourne the following week, just to make sure, but every dress after Lottie paled in comparison! I knew it was the one for me.
Did you write your own vows?
Yes we did! We really wanted to personalise our ceremony as much as we could, and I loved hearing the beautiful words Jake had written about me.
Were there any details that you (and friends and family) made yourselves?
Jake actually decorated our cake! He iced it in white fondant, and covered the top in gold leaf. My cousin Karen made some beautiful pink and gold macarons, and helped my mum arrange them on cake right before the guests arrived.
Jake’s brother Jayden, who was also our MC, made the lace flower girl dress for our niece, Sophie.
Our families helped us set up the table décor the day before, filling vases with hand-picked greenery, and setting out the candles. It really was all hands on deck!
Do you have any words of wisdom for couples planning their big day?
I know it’s been said a thousand times, but the day really does just fly by! Enjoy every moment, and make sure your photographer is incredible! We have the most amazing photos to look back on to remember every detail.
Also, live by the mantra, “everything happens for a reason”. If you find out your venue is no longer available, it may be because somewhere different was meant for you instead. And if you find out your accommodation has caught fire a few months before your arrival, it may be because the new renovations will exceed what was there originally! True story.
Are there any other special details that you would like to tell us about?
We stayed in the most beautiful little bnb the night before and the night of the wedding, Bon Accord in Sale. I hunted around for accommodation that was unique, something that would be a beautiful backdrop for our photos getting ready, as well as the perfect place to wake up as husband and wife for the first time! We stayed in the Stables building, which has an adjoining room to allow plenty of space for the bridal party the night before. The brick and timber details of the Stable really tied together with our venue choice, and Tim made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. It was perfect.
Any funny stories or surprises on the big day?
After seeing the idea on Pinterest, I decided to buy a heap of thongs to leave in a basket by the dancefloor as ‘dancing shoes for tired feet’. I brought roughly 20 pairs, thinking I had gone way overboard, but hey, they were only $1 each, so I didn’t mind. Little did I know, there would be a mad scramble by most of the female guests to nab a pair before the first dance! I really think they helped people stay up dancing all night, so I would highly recommend the idea. (just make sure to buy enough!)
Do you have any stand out vendors from the day?
All our vendors were amazing! Our guests were all super impressed with our food, music, and flowers. The floral backdrop for our ceremony was a huge hit for photo opportunities all night, and it was hard to find space amongst the crowd on the dancefloor.
Our photographer, Nic, was next level. I have been absolutely singing her praises from the day she sent through some sample images, and spamming my social media accounts with her beautiful work constantly! People I barely know have literally stopped me in the street to tell me how amazing our photos are, it’s crazy.
